The Lagoon of Guatavitá is located on 3000 meters in the Cordillera Oriental of the Colombian Andes in the Municipality of Sesquilé.
The Lagoon of Guatavita is one of the sacred lakes of the Muisca and known as « El Dorado » (the golden). The legend of « El Dorado » has its orignin in the ceremony for the new cacique (chieftain), whose body was covered by golddust and who offred gold and esemeralds to the gods throwing it into the lagoon.
